at last explained

"in your mind’s eye draw a vertical line down the middle dividing the illustration above into two equal parts. use your finger or fold the picture lengthwise if this helps. got it? okay, here we go, just as if this piece is being written at this moment. left to right, the top line reads, "oppo" on both its left side and right side. the line immediately underneath gets a little harder to decipher, especially in this diminutive reproduction, but it reads "site" on both the left and right sides of the imaginary middle line. AHA! a lightbulb goes on in your head, right? you see now that the name of this writing is being spelled out on opposite sides of this piece exactly as if you had taken a piece of ruled paper and folded it lengthwise, then began writing in large letters, "opposite dimples in the bored mind of the squid" down the left side of the fold and then "opposite dimples in the bored mind of the squid" down the right side of the fold in 9 "stanzas" or lines always repeating what letters fit on the left side on the right side.

"the squid, you see, is bored. his mind is bored on both of its "opposite dimples". and so i felt compelled to illuminate this state of the squid’s boredom on each of the "opposite dimples" (sides of the piece). why ever, you might ask, would anyone write such a line. whoever heard of such a writing as this. exactly why it had to be done. it is my job to make words visible, for the eye, not only for the ear or the mind. i blow them up, make them large, allow them to be absurd. i love the look of words amplified. this writing measures 38 inches by 31 inches framed. it is on cork in which the words have been etched with lead pencil, then painted using four acrylic colors, light magenta, hooker green, payne’s gray, and light ultramarine blue applied pictorially rather than merely following the outlines of the letters of the words. i made a series of writings on cork board at this time, "boondoggled and blabbering", "waiting for the petunias 2 show their cheery face", and "i think yr gonna see the shiznit 2 nite," this sort of thing which some call experimental writing. i call it writing, plain and simple. i think i am a writer therefore i write."
