Cartoon Crankshaft Spiral Notebook
"I was working on the first piece in this series (Cartoon) when it occured to me it was a map of the universe, or even, a ‘cartoon cosmos’. As I had two more canvases ready I realized it was the beginning of a series.
As with everything I do my source is poetic associations rather than intellectual ideas. While painting the third canvas I began to see it as something spinning rapidly like the crankshaft in the engine of a car, a ‘cartoon crankshaft’.
Thus another poetic element entered the mix, alliteration. I renamed canvas#2, which I called ‘cartoon timepiece’ to ‘cartoon clock’."
