Live Lines
"drawn lines, usually with lead pencil, have been a fundamental of my artfrom the beginning. over time, I added what i call 'live lines' to my work. 'live lines' are curvilinear & zigzag lines formed by painting their outline & leaving a 'line' as negative space. they are 'live' because i paint them spontaneously.
recently i’ve combined the curves & zigzags of 'live lines' with the pencil drawn line to use as shapes (see illustration) in my paintings, drawings & sculptures.
in non objective works, as #1 'what the moment has to say' & #2 'dancing girl', the 'live line' shapes are drawn on the canvas & diagonal, vertical & horizontal lines added. then the areas created by the crisscrossing lines arepainted.
the three 'car' paintings, #3 'will & nellie’s ride', #4 'chet’s ride' & #5 'pat’s ’36 ford', are done from old photographs. the images — cars, trees, people, etc., are drawn first & the curvilinear & zigzag shapes next. then the areas defined by the nonobjective drawing over the objective drawing are randomly painted.
my hope in all this is the result will be something which disrupts our usual ways of seeing, or at least, makes a picture that is fun to look at."
